Displayed at: Umlauf Sculpture Garden + Museum

Winner: 2024 AIA Austin Emerging Professionals Design Shine Competition

Voxels were displayed at the Umlauf Sculpture Garden in Austin, TX, from November 2024 to  April 2025, as a winning submission to AIA Austin Emerging Professionals' Design Shine Competition.

The competition's theme for 2024 was "sit with us," challenging designers to conceive a chair that transcends its traditional purpose, transforming into a captivating art piece that enhances its surroundings.

Thanks to: Umlauf Sculpture Garden, and AIA Austin's Emerging Professionals Committee for sponsorship,  Andalusia Design for material and fabrication support, Polymershapes for acrylic, and Spectrum Lighting for lighting.

A Voxel is defined as "a representation of a value on a three-dimensional regular grid, akin to the two-dimensional pixel."

This installation features four volumes, each composed of four 15.75 cubic inch voxels. These four volumes can be endlessly rotated, rearranged, and combined, evoking the joy of childhood building blocks and encouraging hands-on engagement and creativity.

The ends of each volume feature uniquely colored acrylic faces; these faces can be illuminated, transforming the blocks into vibrant displays of color and light.

Illumination

At night, integrated lighting illuminates the acrylic faces, transforming the installation into a vibrant landscape of color and light.

Arrangement Renderings

Volumes were designed to be infinitely rearrangeable and neatly interlock with each other.

Voxels were inspired by the lighting and formal qualities of artists James Turrell and Donald Judd.
